Derek Paravicini was born 15 weeks premature. He had to undergo immediate oxygen therapy to survive. The treatment left him permanently blind. Later in life he was diagnosed with autism. Despite his disabilities, Paravicini is an amazing piano player.

Paravicini is a musical genius. He can instantly recall and play any song he’s ever heard. But his talents extend far beyond technical skill and memory tricks. He has perfect pitch. This is the ability to identify notes without a point of reference.

He can write music on the fly. He can creatively modify existing pieces. And he can instill his playing with emotion.

These are skills the world’s best pianists struggle to master. Paravicini is truly a musical prodigy. Yet he has trouble counting to 10.
