Air Races

8/1/08

Red Bull is an energy drink. I’m a big fan of Red Bull. I force my older employees to drink it. Then I can work ‘em extra hard. Just kidding!

Red Bull is a big player in the sports world. It sponsors some of the top extreme sports athletes. And it’s involved in some unconventional sports, as well. This Video of the Day comes from one of those.

When did you last ponder airplane racing? It’s been awhile, probably. Well, for your information, air racing has been around since 1909. It’s been a fairly niche sport. That is, until the Red Bull Air Race World Series. This race brings together the best pilots from around the world. And it draws thousands of new fans to the sport.

Here you’ll see American Mike Mangold winning his second World Series. He twists and turns at incredible speeds. In one maneuver he pulls a record-setting 9.6 g’s (That is 9.6 times the usual force of gravity.). That’s more than three times the g’s astronauts experience during a shuttle launch! A typical person can only withstand 5 g’s before passing out.

This is one hot ride!
