Musical roads
8/16/08We’ve all drifted onto the shoulder of a highway. Often, there’s a warning strip of grooved asphalt. It makes noise, in case you had fallen asleep.
A Japanese designer found a novel use for that warning strip. Running over the strip produces a hum in a vehicle. If the space between grooves is changed, the hum changes pitch. By laying out a pattern of grooves, the designer could play music.
It’s called a Melody Road. The grooves are cut across the entire street. When driven at the proper speed, drivers hear a song. There are now three Melody Roads in Japan.
