Gravity wave
8/25/08The Earth’s natural processes can be difficult to demonstrate. Many involve unseen forces. The moon creates the tides. Geological shifts lead to earthquakes.
But sometimes we get a glimpse into that strange world. This Video of the Day will show you gravity waves.
Gravity waves are an atmospheric phenomenon. The word gravity is a little misleading. Instead, focus on waves. Gravity waves are ripples in the air mass in the lower atmosphere. Think of throwing a pebble into a pond.
You obviously can’t see air moving. But with the right cloud cover, the effect is pronounced and mesmerizing. This video shows a textbook example of gravity waves.
