Tama visited the station everyday. She became a popular feature for the small station. The Wakayama Railway decided to award Tama the position of stationmaster. In lieu of salary, Tama is paid in free food.
Tama was a hit across cute-obsessed Japan. People started traveling from miles around to see Super Stationmaster Tama. This increased tourism has netted the small town an estimated $10 million.
