Antique modem still works
6/2/09This great YouTube video features a treasure of technology. A man was cleaning out an attic for an elderly friend. She happened to be the widow of a retired computer engineer. In the attic, he found an unassuming wooden box.
It turned out to be an antique acoustic coupler modem from 1964. It was one of the first ways to link computers. Very few of these exist today. You’d be lucky to see one in a museum.
Believe it or not, this one still works. This IT pro demonstrates it beautifully. He explains the ins and outs in plain English. He even gets it to access Wikipedia. It’s incredibly slow. But it works!
