Exploring without sight

7/8/09

How people interact with the world changes without sight. The outdoors can seem an especially challenging place. Some outdoor adventures may seem out of reach.

But that isn’t the case for these high school and college students. They spent 14 days exploring the Grand Canyon. They hiked its rough trails, and braved the turbulent Colorado River.

They were part of a program called Lead the Way. That’s an outdoor adventure program for blind students. The program takes these kids all over the world. And one inspirational man, Erik Weihenmayer, spearheads it. Weihenmayer was the first blind man to summit Mount Everest.
